Mesothelioma is not a condition that many teen girls are aware of, but America’s younger mall shoppers are becoming more and more aware of the rare and fatal form of cancer as a result of continuing reports of asbestos being found in Claire’s makeup products. Claire’s is a retailer that is ubiquitous in malls, targeting teen girls with competitively priced accessories and makeup. In December it came under fire after a mother privately submitted nine of their products to a laboratory for asbestos testing, which came back positive. Though the brand initially denied the findings, they recalled nine products and issued a statement expressing their concern for consumer safety. Now a study requested by a non-profit consumer advocacy group has identified asbestos in several other products sold by the store.
Asbestos is the single source of malignant mesothelioma, as well as numerous other asbestos-related diseases. It is primarily a health concern for people who are occupationally exposed to it, including firefighters, auto mechanics, insulators and those who work in construction. With the results of the study commissioned by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group (PIRG), teen girls using the following products are suddenly included in that list:
- Claire’s Contour Palette (a blush shade)
- Claire’s Shadow & Highlight Finishing Kit (a dark brown eyeshadow)
- Claire’s Compact Powder (White)
PIRG sent those and other products to the STAT Analysis Corporation lab for testing, and Claire’s has argued that the lab’s testing methods are “obsolete and unreliable”. The company’s statement says in part that “customer safety is of paramount concern, and we pride ourselves in providing our customers with quality products that we stand by.” When PIRG requested that the Claire’s products be tested, they provided numerous other beauty brands at the same time. All of those other products tested negative for asbestos.
Unfortunately, the history of malignant mesothelioma is replete with stories of companies hiding the dangers of asbestos. If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with an asbestos-related disease as a result of a company’s negligence, we can help. Call us today at 1-800-966-2244.
