People who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma have already been victimized once: exposed to asbestos by companies that were well aware of the dangers of the carcinogenic material, they now face a grim prognosis and an expected survival rate that rarely exceeds two years. Now, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning that they risk being harmed by yet another set of people putting profit over people: companies that are marketing false hope of a cancer cure in pill or bottle form.
According to the FDA, there are products being manufactured and marketed to mesothelioma patients as well as other cancer patients by companies that are selling their products illegally. The companies make fraudulent claims on websites and through social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter, promising that they can cure cancer or relieve its symptoms. Their products are unproven, untested, and may actually cause harm.
According to the FDA’s director of their Office of enforcement and Import Operations, Douglas W. Stern, “We encourage people to remain vigilant whether online or in a store, and avoid purchasing products marketed to treat cancer without any proof they will work. Patients should consult a healthcare professional about proper prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.”
Traditional mesothelioma treatment generally consists of a combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. In some cases a protocol’s aim is to extend life and provide a temporary cure, while for others patients the mission is simply to provide relief for the pain caused by their symptoms. In all situations, patients are encouraged to seek out complementary therapies that have been proven to offer pain and stress relief: these include yoga, meditation, hypnosis and acupuncture. But the offerings being put forth by companies including SunStone’s Essiac Tea, BioStar’s Reviin and others are making false claims and promises about products that have never gone through the necessary clinical trials or quality controls that are demanded by the FDA.
It is unfortunate that so many companies are so focused on profit that they are willing to take advantage of others. Mesothelioma patients are the ultimate example of being victimized by profiteers, as the asbestos companies knowingly exposed them to the hazards of asbestos with no protection and no warning. As a result, many of these companies have been required to provide compensation to their victims, either through asbestos bankruptcy settlements or through jury-awards following mesothelioma lawsuits.
